Well this is ridiculous.
Correct me if I’m wrong but I was under the impression that the Cold War was over. To give you a short recap, federal agents have busted a ring of supposed Russian spies given long-term, deep cover missions and planted in the U.S. Two of the ten people accused of spying for Mother Russia are Donald Heathfield and Tracey Foley who have been living as a couple in Cambridge for more than TEN YEARS. They claim they were born in Canada and became naturalized U.S. citizens in 1999 yet court documents state the couple used shortwave radio messages, notes in invisible ink and secret codes buried in public websites to communicate with Moscow. They also got busted burying cash the Russian government sent to them, sometimes upwards of $40,000! Just to put that in perspective, that much money could buy you fifty pairs of Louboutin pumps. FIFTY!
Here’s a quote from this article that’s pretty terrifying:
Court papers say “a Boston Conspirators’ Electronic Message to Moscow Center from in or about May 2006, focused on turnover at the head of the CIA and the 2008 U.S. presidential election.”
SERIOUSLY? I thought these kind of spy shenanigans could only be found in crappy thriller novels you can buy at the airport. To top it all off, the woman that’s getting most of the media’s attention is now being dubbed “The Lady in Red”.
This is her:
Her name is Anna Chapman and according to this article, federal agents have been keeping an eye on her for more than a decade because her little sister dated the son of an American intelligence worker. This is just way too bizarre.
So what do you think of this story? How long until it gets picked up for a movie deal?
